Oboabona Warns Eagles: ‘Talent Alone Won’t Win AFCON — Every Player Must Bring Discipline and Hunger’

Former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has delivered a strong message ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, insisting that Nigeria absolutely has the talent to win the tournament, but only if the players match their ability with discipline, commitment, focus, and collective effort.

Oboabona, a key figure in Nigeria’s victorious 2013 AFCON squad, said the current group possesses more than enough quality to challenge for the title, but stressed that trophies are won through hard work and unity, not individual brilliance.

“Yes, we have the quality to win AFCON. But talent alone won’t deliver the trophy. Every player must bring energy, determination, discipline, and responsibility,” he said.

He warned that modern African football is extremely competitive, and any team that relies solely on star power will be punished by hungry, well-organized opponents.

“You don’t win tournaments with big names. You win with players who are ready to fight for 90 minutes, who work for each other,” he added.

Oboabona emphasized that Nigeria’s recent disappointments, including missing two straight World Cups, should motivate the players to give everything in Morocco, not weigh them down.

“This AFCON is a chance to restore Nigeria’s football image. The world knows we’re better than what we’ve shown recently,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of mental readiness, saying the Super Eagles must enter the tournament with focus and humility, not distractions or complacency.

“AFCON demands concentration. One mistake and you are out. The boys must stay focused from the first day of camp,” he warned.

Oboabona called for unity within the squad, noting that championship teams succeed because they understand their roles and complement one another.

“Football is a collective effort. No one wins alone. When everyone works together, Nigeria becomes unstoppable,” he said.

He concluded by urging the nation to support the team while expecting the players to give everything they have.

“Nigeria needs this AFCON. If the players truly give their all, the trophy can return home,” he affirmed.
