Chukwueze Shines: ‘I Didn’t Expect to Start, But Hard Work Put Me in the Spotlight!’

Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze has opened up about his surprise inclusion in the starting lineup against Tottenham, admitting he didn’t expect to be named in the XI, but trusted his hard work to speak for him. Chukwueze rewarded that faith with a Man of the Match performance, dazzling fans and helping Fulham secure a statement win in the London derby.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect to start. But I believed in the work I’d been doing in training, and I’m really happy it paid off,” he said with a smile after receiving the award.

The winger tormented Spurs’ defence all afternoon, combining blistering pace, direct dribbling, and clever movement to produce one of his finest performances since arriving in the Premier League. His energy and unpredictability created space for his teammates and provided Fulham with a constant attacking threat.

“It feels amazing. To start, to contribute, to win Man of the Match, I’m excited and grateful,” Chukwueze added.

He also spoke about adapting to the Premier League, a league he described as fast, physical, and unforgiving. Chukwueze credited fellow Nigerian teammates Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey for helping him settle both on and off the pitch.

“Iwobi and Bassey have helped me a lot. They talk to me, give me advice, and make everything easier. Having them here means a lot,” he revealed.

Chukwueze’s blend of work rate and skill impressed Fulham fans, but it was his defensive contribution that earned praise from teammates and coaches alike. He tracked back, pressed aggressively, and supported the full-back whenever Spurs tried to overload the flanks.

The 25-year-old said he hopes the performance will be a springboard for a consistent run in the team, insisting he is hungry to keep improving.

“This league is tough, but I’m ready. I’ll keep working hard and give everything for the club,” he promised.

For Chukwueze, the match was more than just a win, it was a statement. He belongs in the Premier League, and he’s ready to shine.
