West Africa Para Games Will Produce New Generation of Champions — Odebode

President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Mr. Sunday Odebode, has expressed confidence that the maiden edition of the West Africa Para Games will serve as a vital platform for discovering the next generation of world-class Para-athletes across the sub-region.

Speaking in Abeokuta, the venue of the event, Odebode described the Games as a crucial step in strengthening the talent pipeline for future international competitions.

“That is why we must strive to ensure this first edition holds. We will continue to improve until we get it right. Nigeria is doing well, but we must keep developing and discovering new Para-athletes,” he said.

Odebode acknowledged that West African nations remain “a bit behind” in Para sports development but insisted that the region has the potential to produce global stars with proper investment and sustained commitment.

He commended Ogun State for accepting to host the inaugural Games in Abeokuta despite notable logistical and organisational challenges.

He also praised the National Sports Commission led by Shehu Dikko, Director-General Bukola Olopade, and the Africa Paralympic Committee for supporting Nigeria to secure the hosting rights.

Odebode further applauded the leadership of the Africa Paralympic Committee under Mwale Nsio Oduko and Director-General Bukola Olopade — whom he described as “the people’s director” — for their resolve in ensuring the long-awaited Games finally commenced after several postponements.

Highlighting Nigeria’s strong record in Para sports, he recalled the country’s recent global feats, particularly in powerlifting.

“People living with disabilities have made Nigeria proud. Recently, Nigeria finished second out of 74 countries in world powerlifting. These accomplishments show why we must continue to invest in developing Para-athletes across West Africa,” he noted.

More than 700 athletes from across the sub-region have already arrived in Abeokuta for the historic competition.

The 1st West Africa Para Games is expected to deepen regional unity, promote inclusion, and raise the competitive standard of Para sports in the region.

The Games kicked off on Friday and will run until Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
