Former Super Eagles’ star, Yakubu Aiyegbeni has come out with a no holds barred declaration that the Nigerian team has failed to shine in recent days because the strikers are not ready to play.
Sports247 reports that the former hitman, who achieved top marks with Middlesbrough, Everton, Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City of England, singled out Victor Osimhen as the Eagles’ only committed striker.

While citing last Sunday’s poor show against DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification play-offs final, the former striker, who was dubbed ‘Yak Attack’ during his days in England, noted that the Eagles crumbled due to Osimhen’s inability to enter for the second half.
Aiyegbeni further pointed out while speaking on Home Turf podcast that the Super Eagles’ attack would be fearsome and almost unstoppable if other strikers in the squad put in as much effort as Osimhen does during matches.
“We have like four other strikers, but only one delivers. Only one plays like a madman on the pitch. He’s aggressive and livid when things go wrong. We only have Osimhen. I think the rest are just happy to be in the national team,” The Yak opined.
He concluded by recalling how the battle for Nigeria’s top striker’s role was tough during his days with the Eagkes and urged the current set of attackers in the Nigerian team to become hungry for action.
“Back in my days, we had me, Julius Aghahowa, Obafemi Martins, Victor Agali. Everyone wanted to play. If I were on the bench, I was vexed, but these players, if they don’t play, they’ve accepted Victor is the deserving starter.
“Don’t get me wrong, Victor is number one, one of the best in the world, but the other strikers we have are not ready to play,” Yakubu submitted.
