“Painful Night, But We Take Responsibility” — Nwabali Speaks As Nigerians Salute Their Goalkeeper

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has apologised to Nigerians following the team’s painful World Cup playoff exit to DR Congo, saying the entire squad accepts full responsibility for the disappointment.

“It is painful,” Nwabali said. “We all gave our best for the badge, but our best was not enough on the night. I was once a fan before I became a player, so I know exactly how it feels to wake up after a disappointing result. We take full responsibility.”

Despite the heartbreak in Rabat, fans across Nigeria and the diaspora have rallied behind the Chippa United goalkeeper, praising his commitment, consistency and leadership since breaking into the national team.

Supporters described him as a player who “served the green badge with passion, pride and unshakeable spirit,” noting that he brought stability back to Nigeria’s goalkeeping department at a time when confidence in the position was low.

They reflected on the journey that began with his heroic performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a pivotal role in guiding the Super Eagles to the final. Since then, Nwabali has produced several standout displays that restored belief in the national team and earned him widespread admiration.

Fans admitted that while qualification for the CONCACAF intercontinental playoffs was within reach, the outcome in Morocco simply wasn’t Nigeria’s night. Still, they insisted that the defeat does not diminish Nwabali’s achievements or his place among the nation’s respected football figures.

“From AFCON to the World Cup qualifiers, Nwabali stood tall for Nigeria,” one supporter said. “He earned the respect of millions and proved himself to be a goalkeeper of rare courage and consistency.”

For many, Nwabali remains a symbol of hope — a reminder that even in difficult moments, there are players who give everything for the jersey.

“A true professional today, tomorrow and always,” another fan wrote. “Nigeria is proud of you.”
