NPFL: How Maikaba’s ‘Retieni e Passa’ Masterclass Sank Eguma, Enyimba in Aba

Wikki Tourists delivered one of the most tactically commanding performances of the NPFL season as Abdul Maikaba’s men stunned Enyimba 1–0 in Aba, breaking the People’s Elephant’s famed home invincibility with a disciplined execution of the ‘Retieni e Passa’ philosophy.

The Enyimba International Stadium—renowned as a fortress for the nine-time NPFL champions was unusually quiet on Match Day 13, as the visitors controlled the rhythm and momentum from start to finish.

It was not a late winner or a moment of individual brilliance that silenced the Aba fans, but a well-drilled, cohesive system built on possession, movement, and intelligent pressing.

At the heart of Wikki’s triumph was Maikaba’s adoption of the Italian-styled tactical approach known as Retieni e Passa, meaning “hold and pass.” More than a simple passing routine, it is a philosophy anchored on ball retention, structured movement, midfield superiority, and rapid decision-making.

The system emphasizes four key principles:

1. Tempo Control: Wikki alternated deliberate, short passing sequences with quick vertical breaks, manipulating Enyimba’s defensive shape.

2. Positional Interchange: Constant movement created passing triangles and ensured safe outlets for the man on the ball.

3. Press and Counter-Press: Every turnover was met with immediate pressure, forcing Enyimba to concede possession cheaply.

4. Midfield Overload: Using a flexible 4-3-3/4-2-3-1, Wikki consistently outnumbered Enyimba in central areas.

Enyimba, usually dominant at home, struggled from the opening whistle as Wikki starved their creative players of space and time.

Passes that typically came naturally became rushed under pressure, resulting in repeated turnovers.

Maikaba later revealed the simplicity behind his complex approach: “The plan was to starve them of possession. Two seconds on the ball—Retieni e Passa. Hold it, look up, move it. The boys executed it perfectly.”

The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute after a 15-pass sequence lured Enyimba’s back line out of shape.

A piercing vertical ball released Abubakar Aliyu, who finished clinically with a powerful left-footed effort.

Despite pushing forward in the second half, Enyimba could not break Wikki’s rhythm or structure.

Whether they pressed high or sat deep, Maikaba’s men controlled the midfield and dictated the tempo with remarkable composure.

The defeat proved costly for Enyimba beyond the dropped points.

Shortly after the match, the club announced the suspension of head coach Stanley Eguma and his assistants as the management moved to halt the team’s downward spiral.

For Wikki Tourists, the victory was more than a tactical triumph. it was a statement.

It showed that in the NPFL’s demanding environment, a refined, possession-based approach like Retieni e Passa can overcome even the most intimidating venues and decorated opponents.
