Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has called on Nigeria to reproduce the same “big mentality” they showed in extra time against Gabon as they prepare for tonight’s decisive World Cup playoff final against DR Congo in Rabat.
The former Real Sociedad star praised the team’s bravery and composure under pressure on Thursday, describing it as one of the most important psychological victories the squad has earned in recent years.

Adepoju said he was particularly impressed with how the team reacted after Gabon’s dramatic 89th-minute equaliser, insisting that such responses are what define teams with true World Cup character.
According to him, Eric Chelle’s men demonstrated maturity and tactical discipline—qualities he believes will be crucial against a determined DR Congo side that has already knocked out Cameroon to reach tonight’s final.
“Nigeria must show the same courage, the same hunger, the same drive,” Adepoju said. “This game is about mentality. The World Cup is the highest stage, and qualifying requires strength in difficult moments. We saw that strength against Gabon.”
Adepoju, a veteran of multiple AFCON and World Cup campaigns, also referenced Nigeria’s historical dominance over DR Congo, recalling victories in three AFCON tournaments—1976, 1992, and 1994—plus the 5–0 friendly win in Abuja in 2010. However, he warned that history alone cannot win tonight’s match.
“DR Congo are not the same team Nigeria beat many years ago,” he cautioned. “They are athletic, organised, and they fight for every ball. But Nigeria is Nigeria. With our quality, if the boys stay focused, they can win.”
Adepoju also commended Chelle’s unbeaten record in competitive fixtures and his ability to create a strong identity in a short time. He urged the players to give the coach “the perfect reward”—a ticket to the intercontinental playoff.
“This is the moment,” Adepoju said. “No excuses. No distractions. Win tonight, and Nigeria is one step from the World Cup. The boys know what this means.”
