Jay Jay Okocha Urges Super Eagles To Stay Focused Ahead Of Gabon Playoff Clash

Former Nigerian international Austin Jay Jay Okocha has sent a message of encouragement to the Super Eagles as they prepare for their crucial World Cup qualification playoff against Gabon, stressing that the players must remain calm, focused, and resilient in the face of mounting pressure.

Okocha acknowledged the tension surrounding the squad following recent disputes over unpaid wages and training boycotts, but he emphasized that the team must keep their eyes firmly on the prize.

“Sometimes, football is not straightforward,” Okocha said. “There are moments when things have to be done the hard way. But these players know the stakes. They feel the pressure of the nation’s expectations, and they also understand what it means not to qualify for the World Cup.”

Okocha, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential playmakers, praised the professionalism of the current squad despite the off-field challenges. He noted that navigating such distractions is part of the modern game, and the players’ ability to stay united will be crucial for success in Morocco.

“They have to focus on the game and trust each other,” he continued. “The coaches, the staff, and the players are all working towards one goal—making it to the 2026 World Cup. That mission cannot be derailed by external issues.”

The former midfielder also urged the NFF to address player concerns promptly, highlighting that resolving financial disputes would allow the squad to concentrate entirely on their performance on the pitch.

“The Super Eagles have the talent, the experience, and the determination,” Okocha added. “If everyone is supported and motivated, nothing can stop them. These are players who understand the weight of representing Nigeria, and they will rise to the occasion if they are treated fairly.”

Okocha concluded by wishing the team well, insisting that with focus, discipline, and unity, the Super Eagles are more than capable of overcoming Gabon and securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
