The opening comes less than a week after Usman (The Nigerian Nightmare) said he is ready to fight the winner of Saturday’s welterweight title main event between the reigning champion, Jack Della Maddalena and former lightweight holder, Makhachev, who moves up in weight.

All eyes are already on this weekend’s bout at Madison Square Garden in New York, but Makhachev is looking furtger ahead, as he disclosed that he would like to have Usman in a potential title defence.

That would be a huge relief for Usman, who had a unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley in June, which ended his three-fight losing stretch.

Two of those defeats were against Leon Edwards in title fights, while the third was a short-notice loss to Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight bout.

“After Jack, I think Kamaru Usman has the most title defenses at welterweight, now he’s in good position (for a titke shot),” Makhachev said.
