Former Nigerian international Duke Udi has shed light on why Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has been deliberate in finalizing the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup African Play-off Tournament in Morocco.
Udi explained that Chelle’s patience is a strategic decision, aimed at ensuring that all players called up are fully fit and ready for the intense matches ahead. “Eric Chelle is known for being meticulous. He wants to evaluate players coming off demanding European fixtures to see their form, fitness, and mental sharpness before finalizing the list,” Udi said.

The former midfielder emphasized that the coach is especially cautious with players making their African football debuts, including those with dual nationality. “Integrating new players into African competitions requires more than just talent.
The intensity, pace, and style here are different, so Chelle is taking his time to make sure they can adapt and perform under pressure,” Udi added.
He also highlighted that timing the squad announcement carefully prevents unnecessary distractions. “Releasing a list too early can create anxiety or pressure on players who might not be fully ready. By waiting, Chelle ensures that everyone called up is mentally and physically prepared for the challenge in Morocco,” Udi said.
Udi believes this cautious approach reflects Chelle’s focus on balance and team cohesion, rather than rushing to meet deadlines. “The playoffs are decisive. Every match counts. Eric wants players who are ready to give their all from the first whistle. That is why patience is key,” he concluded.
With Nigeria set to face Gabon in the first semi-final at Rabat’s Complexe Sportif Prince Heritier Moulay Al Hassan, Udi said the squad’s preparation and readiness will be vital for Nigeria’s chances of advancing to the intercontinental playoff. “It’s not just about selecting names; it’s about ensuring the team can execute the plan and reach the World Cup,” he added.
