Under the glare of the floodlights at Showtime Arena in Lekki, teenage quarterback Taiwo Oluwalanu stood tall, eyes sharp, heart steady, jersey soaked with effort.
His team, the Raptors, had just fought tooth and nail to a 26–14 victory over Ikan Sports, sealing their spot in the playoffs.

It wasn’t an easy win, and Taiwo knew it
“I feel good because the game was very tough,” he said, still catching his breath. “We didn’t even expect Ikan to come that strong. But I love the energy from my teammates — the defense locked down, and the offense fought till the end.”
There’s a humble charm in Taiwo’s voice, that rare blend of teenage excitement and quiet maturity. When asked to rate his own performance, he laughs and scratches his head.
“Maybe 50 out of 100,” he admits with a grin. “Last week was better, but Ikan really brought the fire today.”
But behind the growing confidence of this young star lies a deeper story one rooted in family, faith, and a mother’s unwavering love.
“My mom can do anything for me to play this game,” he says, the grin softening into a smile. “I love my mom very much. I can’t do without God and my mom.”
Taiwo’s journey began far from the glamour of Lekki.
Back in Ikeja, he was just another boy chasing a dream on dusty school fields around 2022. He remembers sneaking in late from training sessions, only to meet the wrath of a worried sister.
“My sister used to beat me because she thought I was just staying out late,” he laughs. “But when my coach explained everything to my mom, she started supporting me.
She fuel the passion in me after she bought me the first set of jerseys, football gear, everything. That changed everything.”
That moment of belief — a mother choosing to back her son’s dream became the turning point.
From then on, Taiwo’s passion grew with every throw, every snap, every early morning drill.
Now, as he stands among Nigeria’s rising flag football talents, his eyes are set firmly on the future.
“I want to play at the highest level and represent Nigeria too,” he says with conviction. “We just have to keep working hard. I believe Raptors will win this year’s edition.”
As the sun dips below the Lekki skyline and teammates celebrate another hard-earned victory, Taiwo’s story glows with promise, a story of talent shaped by discipline, faith, and love.
Because every pass he throws, every touchdown he celebrates, carries the echo of a mother’s voice, proud, prayerful, and cheering him on from the sidelines
