Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, began their 2025 WAFU B U20 Women’s Cup campaign in style with a 3–1 victory over Ghana at the Stade Omnisports d’Adjohoun in Benin Republic.
The spotlight fell on star forward Jenat Akeremkowei, who was named Player of the Match following her brilliant brace.

Speaking after the game, the young striker said, “I’m really happy with my performance, but this award isn’t just about me. It’s about the whole team.
Everyone worked hard, followed the coach’s plan, and created the opportunities that made it possible for me to score. Without my teammates, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Akeremkowei opened the scoring in the 37th minute and then converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time to give Nigeria a 2–0 lead at halftime. Favour added a third goal directly from a corner, sealing the win before Ghana scored a late consolation.
Reflecting on her Player of the Match recognition, Akeremkowei added, “It feels great to be acknowledged, but I know there are more games to play. I want to keep improving, keep helping the team, and hopefully continue to make an impact in the tournament.”
The victory places Nigeria at the top of the WAFU B U20 standings. The tournament features three teams—Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin Republic—competing in a round-robin format. The team with the highest points after playing each opponent twice will be crowned champions.
Looking ahead, the Falconets will face Benin Republic on Sunday at 10 a.m., with Akeremkowei expected to play a central role once again. “We’re ready for the next match,” she said. “We’ll keep working hard and fight for every point.”
