The founder of the Opobo Marathon, Henry Iyowuna Cookey, says the race has entered a new chapter following the confirmation of Ailes Group as a major sponsor for the 8th edition, set for January 5, 2026, in the coastal town of Opobo, Rivers State.
Cookey described the partnership as a “milestone moment” in the marathon’s evolution from a modest community event to one of Nigeria’s most anticipated road races, attracting runners and visitors from across the country.

“We are delighted to welcome Ailes Group as a valued partner for the 8th Opobo Marathon,” Cookey said.
“This partnership underscores our shared commitment to innovation, wellness, and community development. Together, we’re not just running – we’re going further.”
Since its debut in 2019, the Opobo Marathon has grown into a symbol of heritage, unity, and endurance, showcasing the vibrant culture and hospitality of the Opobo Kingdom while boosting tourism and small business activities in the region.
Cookey said the collaboration with Ailes Group — a fast-rising Nigerian conglomerate with investments in technology, energy, and integrated solutions — will not only strengthen the event’s logistics and reach but also amplify its impact on local communities.
“This isn’t just about competition; it’s about creating opportunities, promoting fitness, and uniting people through sport,” he added.
Ailes Group’s Chairman and Managing Director, Chief Michael Onuoha, said the company was proud to support an initiative that embodies resilience and progress. “Opobo Marathon represents collaboration and growth — values that align perfectly with Ailes Group,” Onuoha said.
The 2026 edition promises to be the biggest yet, with expanded participation, new race categories, and enhanced community engagement — a clear sign that the Opobo Marathon is running stronger than ever.
