Lagos has made history — the Lagos State Sports Commission has officially unveiled a groundbreaking partnership between the Lagos State Government and UK-based Abbey Rangers Football Club, setting a new standard for grassroots football development in Nigeria.
The alliance — the first of its kind between Nigeria and a UK community club — promises to open international doors for young athletes and coaches, creating unprecedented pathways for training, mentorship, and global exposure.

Under the strategic pact, Abbey Rangers FC will collaborate with the Lagos State Sports Commission on a robust seven-pillar framework focused on talent development, coaching enhancement, sports science, community engagement, policy support, resource mobilisation, and infrastructure growth.
This holistic model goes far beyond football training — it lays the foundation for a sustainable sporting ecosystem that nurtures technical education, player welfare, and career progression.
The partnership will roll out state-wide scouting programmes in schools and communities, with scholarships, mentorships, and development initiatives connecting emerging players with professional coaches and role models.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu, described the partnership as “a landmark step in Lagos’ mission to build a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem.”
He added, “This partnership represents a deliberate effort to connect Lagos with global best practices in grassroots football development. Abbey Rangers brings proven expertise and community-driven values that align with our vision to raise world-class talent.”
Fatodu also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support and investment in sports, saying the initiative reflects his commitment to youth empowerment, community development, and economic progress.
Abbey Rangers Chairman Nick Riley hailed the collaboration as a bridge between cultures, noting, “We are proud to partner with Lagos State on this visionary initiative.
