The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, has hailed football as one of the most powerful tools for youth engagement and social change, saying the sport channels young people’s energy into productive and positive pursuits.
Speaking at the kickoff of the 4th Afinni Unity Cup 2025, themed “The Price Before the Prize”, held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Fatodu commended the tournament as a vital community development initiative promoting unity, discipline, and opportunity among young people.

“This is about going back to the community,” Fatodu said. “Football brings peace, creates purpose, and helps young people pursue decent lifestyles. Sports have gone beyond being a hobby — it’s now a global currency, and it’s important that we tap into it.”
The Afinni Unity Cup, organised by Hon. Sulaimon Olarenwaju Afinni, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing the Lagos Island Constituency, began as a small 7-a-side tournament before expanding into an 11-a-side competition.
Hon. Afinni explained that the competition serves as a vital platform for discovering grassroots talent, offering opportunities for local players to attract attention from international scouts and agents, and helping them take their first steps toward a professional career.
A total of 16 teams, representing various communities across Lagos Island, are competing in this year’s edition.
In the opening match, defending champions Ricca/Odunfa were shockingly eliminated after losing on penalties to Pike/Forsythe. Meanwhile, Ita Faji/Evans cruised past Tinubu/Luther with a 3–0 victory, Ebute Elefun/Sura beat Anikantamo/Swamp 2–0, and Massey/Branco thrashed Phase 3 & 4 4–0.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with more round-of-16 clashes, and will culminate in the grand finale on Sunday, November 9 — a day expected to showcase the very best of grassroots football, community spirit, and Lagos youth talent
