Former Super Eagles midfielder Garba Lawal has urged the Nigerian national team to remain fully focused and not underestimate any of their opponents following the AFCON 2025 group stage draw, which placed the three-time African champions alongside Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos, Lawal described the draw as “tricky and unpredictable,” warning that none of the teams should be written off.

“There are no small teams in African football anymore,” he said. “Tunisia are always disciplined and technically strong, Uganda have grown tremendously in recent years, and Tanzania are no pushovers — they’ve improved a lot and have players competing in good leagues.”
Lawal, who featured in several AFCON tournaments during his playing career, said that Nigeria must approach the competition with humility, focus, and hard work if they want to reclaim their continental dominance.
“Every team will raise their game when they play Nigeria,” he noted. “We must match that energy, prepare well, and avoid complacency. On paper, people will say Nigeria are favourites, but football is not played on paper.”
He also backed head coach Eric Sekou Chelle to select players based on form and commitment rather than reputation, noting that consistency and teamwork would be crucial.
“It’s not just about big names,” Lawal said. “It’s about who can fight, who can maintain discipline, and who is ready to give everything for the country.”
Lawal echoed Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong’s comments that African football has become far more competitive, stressing that the difference between top sides and underdogs is now marginal. “The AFCON is not easy anymore,” he added. “You have to earn every win. I believe in this team, but they have to prove it on the pitch.”
