‘Take Criticism As Motivation’ — Sam Sodje Urges Super Eagles Stars To Stay Focused Amid Fan Reactions

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has advised Nigerian players to embrace both praise and criticism from fans, insisting that it comes with the territory of representing the country at the highest level.

Sodje, who earned caps for Nigeria during his playing career, said that footballers must develop mental strength and maturity to handle public scrutiny — especially during intense World Cup qualifying periods.

“When you play for Nigeria, you’re always in the spotlight,” Sodje told reporters. “Fans will talk — it’s their passion. One day they love you, the next day they criticise you. That’s football. Players must learn to take it in stride and use it as motivation to perform better.”

The ex-defender pointed out that fan criticism should not be seen as hostility but as an expression of expectations from a football-loving nation. He added that social media has amplified reactions, but it also gives players a chance to prove doubters wrong through their performances.

“You’re only as good as your last game,” Sodje continued. “That’s the reality. The best way to silence critics is by giving your all every time you wear the green and white.”

Speaking on Victor Osimhen, who has been the subject of heated debates among fans in recent weeks, Sodje came to the Napoli striker’s defence, describing him as one of the most committed players in the squad.

“Victor plays with his heart. He gives everything — his passion is unmatched,” he said. “Fans will always have opinions, but players like Osimhen deserve credit for what they bring to the pitch every single game.”

Sodje concluded by reminding the Super Eagles to keep their focus on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that mental toughness and unity will make the difference when the playoffs begin in Morocco.
