‘We Earned It, Not Luck!’ – Super Eagles Boss Eric Chelle Insists Nigeria’s World Cup Playoff Spot Was Built on Grit and Hard Work

Super Eagles head coach Eric Sekou Chelle has hit back at critics claiming Nigeria “got lucky” to reach the 2026 World Cup playoffs — insisting their progress came through months of sacrifice, sweat and belief.

Speaking after sealing qualification, the Franco-Malian tactician said his players “gave everything for the badge” and proved that focus and discipline still define the Super Eagles.

“From the first day I took charge, I told the boys: we must work, not talk,” Chelle declared. “This is not luck. This is hard work, commitment and unity.”

Nigeria’s revival under Chelle has restored faith among fans after a shaky start to the campaign. The Super Eagles now turn their attention to next month’s continental playoffs in Morocco, where a World Cup ticket will be on the line.

The coach admitted the road ahead will be tougher but believes his squad are mentally ready for the battle.

“We’ve built momentum,” he said. “The playoffs are the real test — and we will face it head-on.”

Chelle also praised his backroom staff and the team’s growing chemistry, describing the current mood in camp as “a family working for one goal.”

“We owe it to the fans,” he added. “They’ve suffered with us. Now, we must finish the job and take Nigeria to the World Cup.”
