Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has thrown his full support behind first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali while warning that Nigeria needs a fighter, not a soft touch, as the team gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco next month.
Chelle, who has overseen the team’s resurgence in recent qualifiers, made his stance clear while addressing questions about Nwabali’s recent performances.

“I don’t want a nice guy in my goal. I need a player with character. I asked Stanley to be a warrior,” he said. “He gives everything for his team and his country. He’s made some mistakes like any other player, but he’s done a lot of good things. He just needs to stay calm.”
The Super Eagles’ manager’s remarks come amid debate among fans and pundits over whether Nwabali should retain his starting spot after some shaky moments in previous matches. But Chelle’s words show his faith in the Chippa United keeper’s ability to stand tall when it matters most.
Nwabali, who became a national hero during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, will be under immense pressure to deliver as Nigeria heads into the decisive playoff round for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
Chelle’s demand for a “warrior” in goal sets the tone for what promises to be an intense and emotional final push. For Nwabali, the message is clear — calmness, courage, and character will determine whether Nigeria makes it back to football’s biggest stage
