‘Just Five Short!’ — Yakubu Aiyegbeni Regrets Falling Short of 100 Premier League Goals but Remains Proud of His Record

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has revealed that one of his few career regrets was failing to reach the 100-goal mark in the English Premier League, admitting he fell just five goals shy of the milestone.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, the ex-Middlesbrough and Everton forward said he remains proud of his record as Nigeria’s all-time leading Premier League scorer, describing the achievement as a “dream come true” given his humble beginnings.

“I wish I got to 100 goals,” Yakubu told reporters. “I finished with 95, just five short. But looking back, I’m proud. Coming from Nigeria and making that kind of impact in the world’s most competitive league means a lot to me.”

Known for his lethal finishing and strength inside the box, Yakubu was a consistent performer across several English clubs, including Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers. His composure in front of goal earned him the nickname ‘The Yak’, with fans fondly remembering his trademark celebrations.

“I gave everything each time I stepped on the pitch,” he continued. “I might not have reached 100, but I’m grateful for the goals I scored and the moments I shared with the fans. The Premier League gave me so much — it’s something I’ll always cherish.”

Since retiring, the 42-year-old has continued to advocate for better structures to develop young Nigerian forwards, urging them to stay disciplined, humble, and consistent.

“Talent will get you noticed, but attitude will keep you there,” he added.
