Oboabona Urges Fans to Keep Faith in Super Eagles, Backs Osimhen’s Tireless Effort

Former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has called on Nigerian fans to continue supporting the national team through its ups and downs, stressing that unity and encouragement are crucial during challenging times.

Speaking in an interview, Oboabona praised Victor Osimhen for his relentless work rate and leadership in attack, despite what he described as a lack of creative supply from midfield.

“Osimhen carries a lot of responsibility in this team,” Oboabona said. “Unlike in our era, when strikers had more service from midfield, he often has to create and finish chances on his own. That takes a lot of energy and determination.”

The former Sunshine Stars and Çaykur Rizespor defender urged Nigerians to remain patient with the team as they prepare for the World Cup playoff stage, insisting that criticism should be constructive rather than destructive.

“It’s easy to support when the results are good,” he added. “But true fans show up when the team is struggling. We have to stay together — the players, coaches, and supporters — because only unity will bring success.”

Oboabona, who featured prominently at the 2013 AFCON-winning campaign, emphasized that Nigeria’s football strength has always been built on courage and belief.

“We’ve always been known for resilience,” he concluded. “Even when things are tough, the Nigerian spirit can turn everything around.”
