Former Ivorian international Didier Drogba has emphasized that Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is crucial for the image and strength of African football on the global stage.
Speaking to international media, the Chelsea legend said that Nigeria remains one of Africa’s football powerhouses and that their presence at the World Cup elevates the continent’s representation.

“Nigeria qualifying is very important for Africa,” Drogba said. “They have the players, the quality, and the fan base that inspires the continent. When Nigeria is at the World Cup, the whole of Africa feels stronger.”
Drogba noted that despite challenges in recent years, the Super Eagles still possess the talent to compete with the best teams in the world, citing their performances at the AFCON and the resurgence under coach Eric Chelle as proof of their potential.
“There’s always high expectation on Nigeria,” he continued. “They just need to find consistency and unity. Once that happens, they can go very far — even beyond the quarter-finals.”
The Ivorian icon also praised Victor Osimhen, describing him as one of the world’s most dangerous strikers and a symbol of African excellence.
“Osimhen is incredible — strong, passionate, and fearless. Players like him remind the world that Africa produces world-class talent,” Drogba added.
Nigeria will compete in the continental playoffs in Morocco next month as they look to secure their ticket to the 2026 World Cup.
