Cape Verde winger Garry Rodrigues has expressed immense joy after his nation sealed a historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup, saying the entire country is celebrating the remarkable achievement.
Speaking after their qualification was confirmed, Rodrigues said Cape Verde’s journey was not easy, especially after failing to qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations. However, he revealed that the disappointment became their biggest motivation, as the squad rallied together to make history.

“The whole country is proud. We didn’t start well in the qualifiers, but we refused to give up,” Rodrigues said. “This qualification means everything to us — the people, the players, and everyone who believed. We are ready to show the world what Cape Verdean football is all about.”
He added that the team’s focus now shifts to preparation for the World Cup itself, emphasizing that they are not just going to participate but to compete. “We want to go there and make Africa proud,” he stated confidently.
Rodrigues, who has been one of the team’s most influential players, described the qualification as a “dream come true,” noting that the achievement will inspire a new generation of footballers across the island nation.
