Flamingos Defender Azeezat Oduntan Targets World Cup Glory in Morocco

As the countdown to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco continues, Flamingos defender Azeezat Oduntan has expressed confidence that Nigeria can go all the way and win the tournament.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure for Morocco, Oduntan revealed that the squad’s primary goal is to surpass their previous quarterfinal finish and lift the trophy for the first time in the nation’s history. Nigeria is drawn in Group D alongside Canada, France, and Samoa, with their opening match scheduled for Sunday, October 19.

“Our target is clear — we want to win the World Cup,” Oduntan said boldly. “We have trained very hard, and the coaches have prepared us well. This team has unity, spirit, and determination. We’re ready to make Nigeria proud.”

The young defender praised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their support, highlighting that the team’s preparation and facilities have greatly improved compared to previous tournaments.

“The NFF has done a lot for us. We’ve had a good camp, played friendly matches, and everyone is in high spirits. We know what’s at stake and are determined to bring the trophy home,” she added.

Oduntan, known for her strong defensive play and leadership on the field, also emphasized that the team’s faith and belief in God remain a central part of their motivation.

“We believe God is in control. We’ll give everything we have, and with His help, we can achieve something special,” she said.

The Flamingos will open their campaign against Canada, before taking on France and Samoa in what promises to be a thrilling group stage. Nigeria finished third at the 2022 edition in India, and expectations are high that the 2025 squad can go one better and bring home the ultimate prize.
