Korean Thanksgiving Comes Alive in Abuja as Ssireum Tournament Draws Over 100 Competitors

The spirit of Korean Thanksgiving, known as Chuseok (추석), came alive in vibrant fashion at the Korea Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) in Abuja, as over 100 athletes and guests gathered to celebrate the season with an energetic display of Ssireum, Korea’s traditional wrestling sport.

The event, now in its second edition, blended the rich traditions of Korean culture with the dynamism of Nigeria’s sporting community.

Among the special guests were representatives from the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation, the Nigeria Police Force, and several other organizations — all invited to witness and participate in the friendly but fierce competition.

Held to commemorate Chuseok, Korea’s harvest festival of gratitude, the celebration featured the Ssireum tournament as its centerpiece — symbolizing strength, unity, and the spirit of thanksgiving.

The sand-filled wrestling ring echoed with cheers as participants grappled, balanced, and strategized to outmaneuver their opponents, showcasing both skill and sportsmanship.

Speaking at the event, representatives of the Korea Cultural Centre emphasized that the Chuseok celebration was not only a way to share Korean traditions but also to deepen cross-cultural friendship between Korea and Nigeria. “Chuseok is about family, gratitude, and togetherness,” one official said.

“Through Ssireum, we celebrate those values while building stronger bonds with our Nigerian friends.”

The event also featured traditional Korean performances, food tasting, and cultural exhibitions, giving attendees a full immersion into the beauty and diversity of Korean heritage.

The success of this year’s edition, organizers said, reflects growing interest in cultural exchange and the increasing participation of Nigerian athletes and spectators in Korean traditional sports.

With the cheers still echoing from the arena, the Chuseok Ssireum Tournament in Abuja has firmly established itself as a unique annual highlight — a festival of friendship, gratitude, and global connection.
