Head coach of Bafana Bafana, Hugo Broos, has expressed cautious optimism that Nigeria’s Super Eagles could play a decisive role in South Africa’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the final round of qualifiers, Broos admitted that his side’s fate may partly depend on the result between Nigeria and Benin Republic in Uyo.

With Group C still wide open and three teams mathematically capable of finishing top, Broos acknowledged that Nigeria’s performance could reshape the standings. He said a Super Eagles victory over Benin would give South Africa the upper hand — provided his team defeats Rwanda in their own crucial clash.
“If Nigeria wins against Benin, then all we need to do is our part,” Broos said confidently. “We respect that it’s not in our control, but we believe the Super Eagles have the quality and pride to make it happen. It would change everything.”
Broos, who guided Cameroon to the 2017 AFCON title, admitted that this final group game is one of the most important for South Africa in over two decades. He emphasized that Bafana Bafana must not rely entirely on other teams but also perform at their best to secure automatic qualification.
“It will be disastrous if we fail to win our own game,” he warned. “We can’t afford to depend solely on Nigeria’s result. We must be ruthless, sharp, and disciplined — because qualification is on the line.”
The veteran Belgian tactician also praised his squad’s mentality despite recent pressure from fans and media. “This group has shown growth and resilience,” Broos added. “Now it’s time to finish strong and give South Africans something to celebrate.
