Nosa Igiebor Urges Super Eagles to Stay Grounded: “Win First, Dream Later”

Former Super Eagles midfielder Nosa Igiebor has called on Nigeria’s senior national team to remain focused on the immediate task ahead — defeating Lesotho — rather than getting distracted by future permutations in the World Cup qualifying series.

Speaking ahead of the game, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner stressed that while the race to the 2026 World Cup remains open, the team must not fall into the trap of overthinking scenarios or relying on other results.

“The players need to focus on what’s in front of them,” Igiebor said. “They shouldn’t worry about what happens in other matches. The only thing that matters now is beating Lesotho and then thinking about the next game. Win first, dream later.”

Nigeria have struggled for consistency in the qualifying campaign, dropping vital points in games they were expected to win. Igiebor said such lapses can only be corrected by focus, discipline, and a strong mentality.

“We’ve always had the talent,” he continued. “But talent alone doesn’t win you games. You need fight, you need commitment. Every minute counts at this stage, and the boys must show they want it more than their opponents.”

The former Real Betis midfielder also praised head coach Eric Chelle for keeping the team organized despite the mounting pressure from fans and media. However, he urged the players to translate that effort into results on the field.

“Chelle is doing a good job trying to steady the ship,” Igiebor noted. “Now it’s up to the players to deliver. Nigerians believe in them, and they must repay that faith.”

The Super Eagles face Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday, needing all three points to stay alive in the race for a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.
