Excitement is running high as Team Nigeria’s para powerlifting contingent departed the country on Tuesday, October 7, bound for Cairo, Egypt, to compete in the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships, scheduled for October 9–18, 2025.
The event marks a major milestone — the first-ever World Para Powerlifting Championships to be hosted on African soil, signaling a new chapter for the sport across the continent.

The first batch of Nigerian athletes jetted out amid cheers, encouragement, and warm wishes from fans, officials, and supporters. The second batch of the contingent is expected to leave Lagos on Wednesday, October 8, completing the full team that will proudly represent the nation at this historic competition.
Speaking ahead of departure, team officials expressed strong optimism about Nigeria’s prospects, citing the athletes’ preparation, experience, and hunger for success.
“Our athletes have trained hard and are ready to make the country proud,” said an official. “Nigeria has always been a dominant force in para powerlifting, and we are confident of maintaining that tradition in Cairo.”
The National Sports Commission (NSC) reaffirmed its full support for the team, emphasizing the government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, excellence, and global competitiveness in sports.
With Nigeria’s rich history of success in para powerlifting, expectations are high that the team will once again lift the nation’s flag high and bring home medals from this groundbreaking championship.
