The Lagos City Hockey Stadium was filled with excitement on Sunday afternoon as the Lagos Stallions edged the Kano Warriors 3–2 in a thrilling National Men’s Hockey League encounter.

At the center of the action was 22-year-old forward Evakalu Christian, whose pace, skill, and determination proved decisive for the Stallions. Evakalu assisted in two goals before scoring the winner that secured victory for the Lagos side.

Despite his outstanding display, Evakalu continues to play without any form of sponsorship. Speaking after the match, he shared the challenges behind his passion. “People see the goals but not the grind,” he said. “Sometimes I play with borrowed gear or worn-out shoes. I just make it work.”

Born and raised in Surulere, Lagos, Evakalu’s love for hockey began at a community sports center. With limited facilities, he practiced using improvised sticks and cones made from bottles. Coaches quickly recognized his potential and described him as “a player born to create magic with a stick.”

Evakalu said his biggest motivation comes from his younger brother, who constantly encourages him to keep going. “The love for hockey keeps me pushing,” he said. “I can’t imagine my life without it.”

Looking ahead, Evakalu hopes to represent Nigeria on the international stage. “Every match is a chance to be seen — to remind people that there are players out here who just need a little help to fly,” he said.

Though he may still be without a sponsor, Evakalu Christian performance on Sunday earned him the admiration of the Lagos crowd and marked him as one of the most promising young players in Nigerian hockey.
