Former Super Eagles midfielder Friday Ekpo has called on Nigeria to take full advantage of FIFA’s points deduction from South Africa, which has reopened qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria had been left with only a slim chance of progressing after a series of disappointing results, but the ruling against Bafana Bafana has given the Super Eagles a lifeline.

Ekpo insists that the team must seize the opportunity by approaching the remaining fixtures with utmost seriousness and preparation.
Speaking in Abuja, the ex-international cautioned that South Africa will be desperate to bounce back from the setback by winning their upcoming games, particularly with the advantage of playing at home.
He stressed that Nigeria must anticipate a strong response and prepare accordingly. “This deduction is a blessing for us, but we cannot relax,” Ekpo said. “South Africa will come out even hungrier, so we must be ready to face the challenge head on.”
Ekpo urged the technical crew to ensure that only the most in-form players are selected for the crucial matches, arguing that reputation should not determine squad places.
According to him, Nigeria can only succeed if players with hunger, fitness, and consistency are given the chance to represent the country. “We need players who are ready to give their all,” he emphasized.
“At this stage, we cannot afford to carry anyone. Only those delivering at club level should wear the green and white jersey.”
The former midfielder also encouraged the team to use the situation as motivation, noting that World Cup participation is the dream of every footballer and every nation.
He stressed that with proper preparation, discipline, and determination, Nigeria has the tools to make a late push for qualification. “The door has been opened again for us,” Ekpo concluded. “Now it is up to the players and coaches to walk through it.”
