Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has warned that despite FIFA’s deduction of three points and three goals from South Africa, Bafana Bafana still have a “crazy” advantage in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The German tactician, who once managed Nigeria, stressed that the punishment has only made the group tighter, but it does not automatically make qualification easier for the Super Eagles. “The situation has changed, yes, but South Africa’s fixtures still give them a strong edge,” Rohr told reporters.

According to him, South Africa’s upcoming games — including a home clash in their final fixture — could still see them secure qualification if they capitalize on their schedule. “They are wounded but motivated. That is always dangerous,” Rohr explained.
He also warned Nigeria not to fall into the trap of overconfidence following the ruling. “The Eagles cannot relax. Their qualification is not in their hands alone. They must win all their games and hope others drop points,” Rohr insisted.
The coach further emphasized that Benin also remain in the mix and cannot be ignored. “We are still fighting. Every team in this group has something to play for. It’s not over until the last ball is kicked.”
Rohr’s comments echo a growing reality — while FIFA’s decision has given Nigeria hope, it has also made the group far more unpredictable. With Lesotho, Rwanda, and Benin all still in contention, the margins are razor thin.
For Nigeria, the message is clear: there is no shortcut. Rohr summed it up bluntly — “If you want to go to the World Cup, you must prove it on the pitch.”
