NPFL: Rivers United Pip Niger Tornadoes, Maintain Unbeaten NPFL Start

Rivers United continued their impressive start to the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday.

The Pride of Rivers went into the game determined to build on their solid early-season form and did just enough to secure all three points, thanks to a second-half strike from Maclyn Biokpo.

The forward showed composure from the penalty spot in the 50th minute, sending the Tornadoes’ goalkeeper the wrong way to hand his side victory in front of their home supporters.

The result means Rivers United remain unbeaten after five games, winning three and drawing two, a run that leaves them third on the log with 11 points.

They also have two outstanding fixtures still to be played, postponed due to their CAF Champions League engagements.

Stanley Eguma’s men recently advanced in continental competition after edging out Aigles du Congo 1-0 on aggregate, and now face an even tougher test against Black Bulls of Mozambique in the second preliminary round.

With a group stage berth and the financial rewards that come with it at stake, October promises to be a defining month for the Port Harcourt side.

On Wednesday, Rivers United dominated possession with 59% and created more opportunities, though they were limited to just two shots on target from 10 attempts.

Niger Tornadoes also threatened on a few occasions, registering two efforts on goal, but were unable to break through a disciplined home defence.

As the fixtures pile up, Rivers United must find the balance between their domestic campaign and continental ambitions.

For now, though, they remain one of the league’s early pacesetters, with confidence steadily building.
