Wasiu Falolu Hails Rivers United’s CAF Champions League Progress After First Start

Rivers United midfielder Wasiu Falolu has expressed his delight after making his first CAF Champions League start in the victory over Aigles FC at the weekend, a result that sealed the team’s passage into the second preliminary round of the competition.

Falolu, who was handed a starting berth by coach Finidi George, thanked the technical crew and his teammates for their support both on and off the pitch. He described the experience as a special moment in his career, recalling how he once admired Enyimba FC’s famous triumph in the early 2000s, and now feels privileged to represent Rivers United on the continental stage.

“Before the game, we believed it was half the job done after getting a draw in Congo. Any win in Uyo would take us to the next round, and getting a late goal in the first half eased the pressure,” Falolu said.

He acknowledged the tough nature of the CAF Champions League, stressing that there are no easy games in the competition. “It’s a process and we had a good start. A draw away in Congo and victory at home have taken us to the next stage. We know what is at stake and we will give everything to make the country proud,” he added.

Looking ahead, Falolu emphasized the importance of balancing continental ambitions with domestic commitments. With the NPFL season underway, Rivers United now shift focus to their midweek clash against Niger Tornadoes, which he described as the immediate priority.

“The most important game now is our NPFL clash against Tornadoes on Wednesday. We have to take it one game at a time,” he concluded.

Rivers United will now prepare for their next test in Africa, with fans hopeful that the Pride of Rivers can continue their march toward group stage qualification.
