NFF’s Congress Charges State Governments To Upgrade Stadiums In Order To Host International Matches

The general assembly of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Saturday charged all state governments in the country to join the task of ensuring that various stadiums within their territories can host major international matches.

Sports247 gathered that, in what apppears to be a move to ensure that Nigerian clubs play matches of continental competitions at their various bases, instead of borrowing facilities outside their states, the NFF’s Congress ignited a new drive to involve state governments.

Aside ensuring that clubs play continental games on the same home grounds they regularly use in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), the Congress also expressed a strong desire for a return to days of yore when Super Eagles’ matches could also be staged anywhere in the country at short notice.

Sports247 gathered as much from a communique that was released at the end of the NFF’s 2025 general assembly, which took place on Saturday at Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, in Orita-Meta area of Ibadan.

Aside a strong call for better facilities nationwide, the Congress also passed a vote of confidence on the current tenure of Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau as head of the NFF, then thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ‘his steadfast backing of Nigerian football’ and commended National Sports Commission (NSC) chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko for supporting the federation’s programmes.

The communique added in part: “Congress applauded the Government and people of Oyo State for their remarkable commitment to sports advancement and their generous hospitality to delegates and guests, affirming Ibadan’s readiness to host major international football events.

“The Congress commended the steady improvements across the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), and Nationwide League One (NLO). It urged league bodies, referees, and State Football Associations to maintain the drive for higher standards and stronger domestic competitions.

“The Congress called on all State Governments to invest more in standard football infrastructure to meet FIFA and CAF requirements for international matches.”
