Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has praised Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho, describing him as a “very brilliant goal scorer” after the forward found the net in the UEFA Europa League clash against Red Star Belgrade.
Iheanacho came off the bench to rescue a valuable point for Celtic in Serbia, scoring his first European goal for the club in a tightly contested Group Stage encounter.

The match ended 1-1, with Iheanacho’s clinical finish ensuring the Scottish champions avoided defeat in their opening fixture.
Speaking after the game, Rodgers expressed delight at the Nigerian’s contribution but also highlighted the need for the striker to build sharpness. “Kelechi is a natural finisher — he knows where the goal is. What he needs now is more minutes and to be brought up to speed physically, then he will be a massive player for us,” Rodgers said.
The Celtic boss also lauded Iheanacho’s attitude and determination since arriving at the club, insisting that the 28-year-old has quickly adapted to the team’s style. “He has integrated well. His movement off the ball is excellent, and he has the confidence to make an impact when it matters most,” Rodgers added.
The Nigerian striker’s goal was met with loud cheers from Celtic supporters who travelled to Serbia, underlining the connection he is already building with the fans. With the Scottish giants aiming to progress deep in the Europa League, Rodgers believes Iheanacho’s experience and quality will be vital.
Celtic will now turn their focus to domestic action at the weekend before continuing their European campaign in two weeks. For Rodgers, Iheanacho’s performance is a sign of better things to come: “Tonight he showed what he can bring. The more he plays, the more goals we will see.”
