EFL Cup: Tottenham Ease Past Doncaster Rovers 3-0 as Ajayi and Olusanya Struggle

Tottenham Hotspur began life under new boss Thomas Frank in the domestic cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Spurs were not at their sparkling best, but they did enough to book their place in the next round with a professional performance.

Doncaster started brightly, but a costly error from goalkeeper Ian Lawlor gifted Spurs the opener. His mis-hit clearance fell kindly, and Joao Palhinha pounced with a spectacular acrobatic finish. Moments later, the visitors doubled their advantage when defender Jay McGrath, under pressure, bundled the ball into his own net from a teasing cross.

Rovers’ attacking duo, Damola Ajayi and Toyosi Olusanya, battled hard but struggled to make an impact against Tottenham’s backline. Both were withdrawn in the 61st minute, replaced by Molyneux and Hanlan as Doncaster chased a way back into the contest.

Tottenham wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time when Brennan Johnson finished off a swift counterattack, his strike proving the final kick of the game. The Welshman might have had more to his name, but wasteful finishing from Mathys Tel and Richarlison denied him a hatful of assists.

Despite the scoreline, Doncaster impressed in spells, particularly in the second half where they pressed high and carved out promising situations, though they ultimately lacked the cutting edge to produce a shock upset.

For Spurs, it was a routine victory and a confidence-boosting start to Frank’s domestic cup campaign.
