Udodi Onwuzurike, after placing seventh in the men’s 200m semi-final at the World Athletics Championships, admitted the result wasn’t what he had been aiming for.
The sprinter said that this season has been especially hard, marked by multiple injuries and a knee hyperextension in training that forced him to miss several key preparatory meets.

“I’m thankful I made it this far,” Onwuzurike said. “Every race at this level teaches you something. The pain and set-backs—they could have broken me, but instead I’ve learned. How to manage training, recovery, pressure.”
He described the semi-final as a test of resilience. Despite not being in peak shape, he pushed through. What he perceived as faltering in form, he said, taught him to better pace his sprint phases and refine his curve running.
Looking ahead, Onwuzurike vowed to regroup over the off-season. He plans to work extensively with physiotherapists and adjust training to better prevent injury recurrence. He also highlighted mental health and mindset as areas of focus: “Staying positive, believing even when everything hurts, that’s part of being an elite athlete.”
