The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), in partnership with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), has announced that Ghana will host the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship from May 27 to 31, 2026, in Accra.
The championship, moved from its traditional July date, will serve as the qualifier for the 2027 African Games armwrestling competition.

AFA Secretary Julien Boumsong confirmed the decision and urged all member countries to begin preparing their teams for the continental showdown.
Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, and Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation, assured stakeholders of an exceptional tournament, saying: “We are doing everything possible to make sure this championship will be a very wonderful event. As hosts, Ghana is ready to showcase not only its organizational capacity but also the best of African armwrestling to the world.”
The upcoming event follows the successful staging of the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Abuja, Nigeria, from July 23 to 27, 2025, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. That edition drew participation from over 20 African nations, with Team Nigeria emerging overall champions after winning 28 gold, 35 silver, and 38 bronze medals across male, female, and para categories. Nigeria fielded its largest-ever squad of 172 athletes, dominating the left-hand category on the opening day with 24 gold, 19 silver, and 19 bronze medals.
The Abuja championship was widely praised for its high energy, crowd turnout, and improved organizational standards, setting the stage for Accra 2026. Member nations including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and Benin Republic are now expected to battle fiercely in Accra as the competition doubles as the pathway to the 2027 African Games.
