NSC Showers Encomium as Abduljabar Adama Wins Nigeria First Ever Silver at World Junior Swimming Championships

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has congratulated Nigeria’s teenage swimming star, Abduljabar Adama, and the Nigeria Aquatics Federation after the youngster clinched a historic silver medal at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania.

Adama, 17, secured the silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly with a time of 23.64 seconds, narrowly missing out on gold to Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who touched the wall at 23.54 seconds.

NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described Adama’s achievement as a landmark moment for Nigerian sports.

“Abduljabar Adama’s silver medal is a proud moment for Nigeria and for Africa. His hard work and talent have once again demonstrated that our athletes can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world,” Olopade said.

He further noted that the NSC remains committed to creating structures and support systems that will help nurture and develop young talents across the country.

“Moments like this serve as a reminder to us at the NSC to remain committed to providing the support and structure needed to nurture such talents. We believe this is only the beginning of many more international triumphs for him and Nigerian swimming,” he added.

Adama had impressed right from the heats, posting the second-fastest overall time of 23.61 seconds in a field of 116 swimmers across 12 heats. He went on to dominate the semifinals, winning his race in 23.48 seconds before delivering a strong performance in the final.

The silver medal further cements Adama’s rising profile in international swimming.

Earlier this year, he stole the spotlight at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt, where he won three gold medals, one bronze, and set multiple records, including a new African junior record in the 50m freestyle.

With this latest feat, Adama has now firmly established himself as one of Africa’s brightest swimming prospects on the global stage.
