Remo Stars head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, has admitted that his side’s slow start cost them dearly in their opening fixture of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season against Rivers United at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.
The match ended 1-1 after both teams struck early in the first half. Rivers United drew first blood in the 3rd minute through Aniekeme Okon, who etched his name in history as the first goalscorer of the new NPFL season.
Remo Stars responded quickly in the 9th minute, with returning striker Victor Mbaoma finishing brilliantly to restore parity.
However, Mbaoma’s joy was cut short after he picked up an injury and was replaced by Adama Goita midway in the first half.
Speaking after the game, coach Ogunmodede expressed disappointment with his team’s sluggish opening.
“It’s not our normal intensity. We were not too intense in the first 10 minutes, and that cost us the game. We conceded very early, and though we responded almost immediately, Rivers United decided to sit back with a low block, and we couldn’t do enough to unlock the blocks. We will try to improve going forward. It’s just the start of the season.” Ogunmodede said.
On Mbaoma’s return, Ogunmodede could not hide his delight, describing the forward as a huge boost for his squad.
“I am extremely happy. In terms of history, he is the best striker the club has ever had, maybe the best overall. I’m happy he is back at a time when we need more quality in the squad, and he showed class today.”
He, however, expressed concern over the striker’s injury. “For now, we’ll wait for the medical team’s evaluation. I hope it’s not too serious, but it looked bad.”
The game had further drama late on when Rivers United’s Temple Emekayi was shown a straight red card in stoppage time, leaving the visitors to finish with 10 men.
Despite the result, both teams will take positives as they look ahead to Matchday 2 of the NPFL season.
