The Mandela National Stadium will be buzzing on Monday night as Uganda and South Africa face off in a decisive Group C clash at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
For Uganda, it is an opportunity to script history on home soil. For South Africa, it is a do-or-die battle. With a sold-out crowd expected in Kampala, the tie has the feel of a continental final even before the knockout stage begins.

Group C on a Knife’s Edge
Uganda lead Group C with six points and need just a draw to advance. South Africa sit second with four points, meaning only victory will secure their qualification.
Algeria, with three points, remain in contention as they take on Niger in Nairobi. A win could see them progress if results in Kampala go their way.
Uganda’s campaign has been marked by resilience. After opening with a loss to Algeria, Morley Byekwaso’s men bounced back with wins over Niger and South Africa, backed by defensive solidity and the roar of a passionate home crowd.
South Africa, meanwhile, began with a draw against Niger before edging Algeria 2-1 in a must-win game. Now, their fate rests on overcoming the hosts in front of a hostile atmosphere.
Uganda’s Historic Opportunity
Coach Morley Byekwaso is urging his players to seize the moment.
“We know it will be a very tough game, but we are ready. This is our moment to make history,” he said.
Midfield maestro Abdul Karim Watambala and goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa have been standout performers, with Mutakubwa securing back-to-back clean sheets. The absence of Joel Sserunjogi is a setback, but Byekwaso insists his squad has the depth to cope.
“We want to bring joy to our fans. We will play with our hearts,” he added.
South Africa’s Do-or-Die Mission
For Bafana Bafana, the stakes are clear.
“We are fully aware this is a decisive game. For us, it is a final,” coach Molefi Ntseki said. “The pressure is on Uganda, who are expected to win at home. We will focus on our strategy and use transition moments.”
Defender Kwandakwensizwa Mngonyama echoed the fighting spirit:
“I learned from Onyango that discipline and dedication are fundamental. Tomorrow, we want to show that on the pitch.”
South Africa will rely on tactical discipline and counter-attacking efficiency to unsettle the hosts.
Rivalry and Tactical Battle
The two sides have met five times in recent years, each claiming two wins and one draw. This first competitive meeting on Ugandan soil adds intrigue to an already fierce rivalry.
Uganda are expected to maintain their attacking intent, while South Africa will aim to exploit gaps on the break. In a high-stakes match, finishing efficiency could be the decisive factor.
Algeria Eye Lifeline Against Niger
Elsewhere in Group C, Algeria face Niger in Nairobi needing nothing less than victory. Coach Madjid Bougherra called the clash “decisive” for their campaign.
“Our next match will determine our qualification. We want to finish first, but the most important thing is to win,” he told reporters.
Algeria’s inconsistency—beating South Africa but struggling against Guinea—remains a concern. Bougherra admitted his side must improve in front of goal.
“Converting chances remains our challenge. But the real strength of this team is spirit and collective determination,” he said.
Goalkeeper Akram Bouras remains a doubt, but Bougherra insists his players are “focused and ready” for the task.
A Night of High Drama Awaits
With Uganda seeking history, South Africa fighting for survival, and Algeria hoping for a lifeline, Group C is set for a dramatic finale.
Whatever the outcome, Monday night promises to deliver one of the defining moments of CHAN 2024.
