CHAN 2024: Guinea, Uganda in Survival Battles as Algeria Faces Stern South Africa Test in Group C Showdowns

The 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) takes center stage on Friday as Group C returns with two crucial fixtures at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. Algeria face South Africa in a high-stakes encounter, while hosts Uganda battle Guinea in a must-win clash.

Riding on the momentum of a 3-0 victory over Uganda, Algeria top Group C with three points and a perfect defensive record. Coach Madjid Bougherra is cautious but confident ahead of the match against South Africa, emphasizing that “every match must be approached like a final.”

The Fennecs boast a remarkable run of 682 minutes without conceding in CHAN, and another win on Friday will see them advance to the quarter-finals.

Despite their commanding form, Bougherra remains wary: “South Africa is unpredictable. We respect them and will be prepared tactically for all scenarios.”

Attacking midfielder Iheb Belhocini echoed the team’s ambition, stating, “We are ready to win again. That first win boosted our confidence.”

South Africa Seek a Winning Return after 11 Years

After an 11-year absence from CHAN, South Africa are seeking a winning return with Coach Molefi Ntseki insists his squad is “mentally and tactically prepared” to face Algeria’s challenge.

“We want to represent our country with pride. Algeria are tough, but we’ll compete with focus and discipline,” Ntseki said.

Midfielder Neo Maema added: “We’ve done our homework. This is a big opportunity, and we want to stay in the tournament.”

Uganda vs Guinea: Do-or-Die for Cranes

The pressure is on Uganda following their heavy loss to Algeria. Coach Morley Byekwaso has called on his players to show mental strength in a match that could decide their CHAN fate.

“We must win to stay alive. We’ve corrected mistakes and the fans will be behind us,” he said.

Goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa added, “The pressure is real, but we’re united and determined.”

Guinea, level on points with Algeria, approach the match with cautious optimism after a narrow 1-0 win over Niger. Head coach Souleymane Camara warned against underestimating the wounded hosts.

“Uganda will come at us hard. We must stay focused and execute our strategy,” Camara said.

Midfielder Ibrahima Sankhon added, “We’re ready for the challenge — mentally and physically.”

With contrasting motivations and strategies, Friday’s Group C double-header promises intense battles, national pride, and potentially, decisive outcomes in the race for quarter-final places.
