President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with $100,000 each, a plot of land each, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship victory.
The announcement was made during a special reception held at the State House, Abuja, on Monday evening, where the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, praised the team’s consistency, discipline, and patriotism after their 78–64 win over Mali in Sunday’s final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical crew also received $50,000 each, a plot of land, and the OON national award in recognition of their leadership and contribution to the team’s success. Wakama made history as the first female coach to lead a team to an AfroBasket title.
President Tinubu described the team as national heroes and commended them for elevating Nigeria’s name on the global sports stage. He emphasized that the rewards are a reflection of the government’s appreciation for excellence and a motivation for future achievements.
This honour comes just a week after the President similarly rewarded the Super Falcons for winning Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to uplifting Nigerian athletes, particularly women in sports.
