National Sports Commission Celebrates D’Tigress As Nigeria Sets Afrobasket Record With Fifth Consecutive Title

Nigeria’s unstoppable women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have once again ruled the continent with style, strength, and an unshakable winning spirit — clinching an unprecedented fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title, and making it a record seventh championship overall.

With a thrilling 78–64 win over Mali at the Palais de Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on Sunday night, the Nigerian queens of the court extended their remarkable unbeaten streak in the competition to 29 games, dating back to 2015.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has described the victory as “monumental”, praising the team’s unmatched resilience, unity, and determination in dominating African basketball year after year.

“This is a legacy-defining moment,” said NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, who was present in Abidjan with top government officials to witness the feat. “What President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing for Nigerian sports is already bearing fruit. D’Tigress have raised the bar and shown the world the heart of our nation.”

Led by the astute Coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress delivered a tactical masterclass — combining explosive offense, airtight defense, and sheer willpower to dismantle a tough Malian side in the final.

NSC’s Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade emphasized the deeper significance of the victory, noting it as a reflection of Nigeria’s youthful brilliance and the strategic transformation underway in the nation’s sporting ecosystem.

“We are the number one sporting nation in Africa — and our policies at the NSC are built to keep us there,” Olopade said. “This record set by D’Tigress is not only historic; it’s inspirational. It’s a message to every Nigerian child: the podium is possible.”

The team’s return to Nigeria on Monday, August 5, will be marked by a grand reception at the Aso Rock Villa, where President Tinubu will personally receive the champions.

This back-to-back international triumph — from football to basketball — signals a new era for Nigerian sports: ambitious, structured, and proudly unstoppable.
