CHAN 2024: Morocco, Kenya Shine in Opening Matches as 10-Man Madagascar Hold Mauritania

The 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA kicked off with thrilling encounters as Morocco and co-hosts Kenya registered opening wins, while 10-man Madagascar held Mauritania to a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam.

In Group A, Morocco launched their bid for a third CHAN title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Angola at the Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.

Imad Riahi’s stunning first-half strike and an own goal from Angola’s Kinito sealed the win, extending Morocco’s unbeaten run in CHAN group-stage matches.

The Atlas Lions next face Kenya, who shocked two-time champions DR Congo 1-0 in Nairobi.

Austin Odhiambo’s decisive first-half goal made Kenya only the third debutant nation to win their CHAN opener.

Meanwhile, Group B saw a tense battle at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, Dar es Salaam, where Madagascar and Mauritania settled for a 0-0 stalemate.

Madagascar, bronze medalists in 2022, were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute after captain Andriamirado “Dax” Andrianarimanana received a second yellow card.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Malagasy side held firm, with goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa making crucial saves.

Mauritania dominated possession but failed to convert their chances, continuing their run of failing to score in all four of their CHAN opening matches.
