Israel Sunday Okon emerged as Nigeria’s fastest man after winning his first national 100m title at the 2025 Nigeria Trials on Saturday.
Okon clocked an impressive 10.04s (+2.3) to clinch the gold medal at the Yabatech Sports Complex in what turned out to be one of the tightest 100m finals in recent years.

Alaba Akintola finished a close second in 10.05s, while Adekalu Fakorede claimed third place with a time of 10.07s.

Seye Ogunlewe secured fourth position in 10.09s, followed by Olaolu Olatunde (10.15s), James Taiwo Emmanuel (10.16s), and Enoch Adegoke (10.20s).
The final was fiercely contested, with Akintola pushing himself to the limit, even crashing into the finish line in a desperate bid to secure victory.
Initially believing he had won, Akintola approached officials for clarification, but photo-finish results confirmed Sunday Okon as the champion.
With this victory, Sunday Okon stamps his name among Nigeria’s sprinting elite, as he takes over crown off the Kanyinsola Ajayi who pulled out of the competition due to personal reasons.
The trial is to select Athletes who will be representing Nigeria at the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo next month.
