Two youth players from Sporting Lagos, Farooq Alimi and Sheriff Olarewaju, delivered standout performances at the 2025 Gothia Cup in Sweden, contributing to a historic tournament for Nigerian football.
Farooq Alimi featured prominently in a defensive midfield role, earning praise for his tactical awareness, stamina, and transition play. Known for his composure and ball-winning ability, Alimi anchored the midfield with discipline and energy throughout the competition.

At left back, Sheriff Olarewaju combined defensive solidity with attacking runs. His pace, positioning, and technical skill allowed him to contribute effectively in both phases of play, making him a consistent performer on the flank.
Their performances coincided with Nigeria’s most successful outing at the Gothia Cup to date. Nigerian teams won titles in all three boys’ age categories: Sporting Supreme FC claimed the U-18 title with a 4-0 win over Varbergs Bois FC; Beyond Limits FA edged ASEC Mimosas on penalties to win the U-17 final; and Nigerian Eagles U-16 defeated Maryland Bobcats FC 3-0 in their final.
The achievements of Farooq and Sheriff underline the growing impact of Sporting Lagos’ youth development program and highlight the club’s role in nurturing future professionals for both domestic and international stage
