That triumph also made her the first Nigerian woman to coach a team to continental glory since the tournament’s inception.

Beyond continental success, Wakama broke further ground by guiding D’Tigress to the quarterfinals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games—making them the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach that stage.

Her remarkable achievements earned her the prestigious FIBA Best Coach award, solidifying her place as a leading figure in African basketball.

Her return to the national camp signals renewed focus as D’Tigress aim to defend their continental crown and continue their impressive international run.

The competition scheduled to commence on 25 July – 3 August 2025.

All matches will be placed at the 3,500 capacity Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The D’Tigress will begin their title defence in Group D where they will face Mozambique and Rwanda

As preparations gather pace, all eyes will be on Wakama and her squad to uphold Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball and chart another path to continental and global success.
