WAFCON 2024: Ashleigh Plumptre Reveals Strategy That Gave Falcons 5-0 Win Over Zambia

Super Falcons’ left-wing-back, Ashleigh Plumptre has revealed secrets of a near immaculate strategy that gave the Nigerian side a shock 5-0 thumping of Zambia on Friday.

Sports247 reports that Coach Justin Madugu’s side put up a five-star performance that saw different players score each of the Falcons’ goals in this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) first quarter-final fixture.

Osinachi Ohale romped from defence to head home the opening goal after just two minutes, following which Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Tosin Demurin and Folashade Ijamilusi followed suit.

With five different players from various playing positions netting the goals for Nigeria at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco, Plumptre disclosed that it was simply because they opted to put aside individual flair and play as a team.

The former Leicester City Ladies of England defender, who now plays in Saudi Arabia, added that many women’s football fans across Africa and beyond already know the Falcons’ attacking flair, but pointed out that Friday’s game showed that they have a lot more to offer in all departments of the field.

Plumptre disclosed, “Obviously, we have a good attacking threat, but we also take pride as a whole team to defend well.

“You can tell from our games that we all defend as one, and we attack as one. We do not rely on only one goal scoring option, but we have threats that can come from numerous places.”

With attention now turning towards the semi-finals on Tuesday, Plumptre, a Caucasian who qualifies to play for the nine-time African champions because her grandfather was born in Nigeria, promised that the Falcons will not concentrate on any star player in each opposing squad.

“We don’t prepare for just one or two players, but we prepare to play a whole team. We know they can have threats coming from different aspects, which is the same for us as well,” Plumptre posited.
