Former Super Eagles winger Tijani Babangida has publicly shared his and his wife’s arduous journey to recovery following a May 2024 accident that resulted in the death of their son and brother.
In an emotional interview with Emmanuel Babayaro, Babangida revealed that they spent nearly a year in the Netherlands undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.

He underwent knee surgery, and today reports being 90 percent recovered, continuing physiotherapy . His wife, actress Maryam Waziri, also sustained serious injuries, yet Babangida praises the “careful and effective” Dutch medical system for her ongoing recovery .
Babangida expressed hope of seeing his wife regain strength and return to public life soon, crediting Europe’s healthcare for delivering exceptional support: “Their careful and effective approach has made a big difference.”
The former Ajax winger, once celebrated on Europe’s biggest stages, shared how grief and gratitude now define his journey. He acknowledged the emotional and physical toll, but said that every step closer to full recovery “feels like a new beginning.
” The extended rehabilitation marks a hopeful turning point for one of Nigeria’s 1990s football icons.
